When you have a leak in your roof, understanding the route water takes is the first step to identifying your options. Here are some facts you should know about roof leaks and repairs.
Only Leaks During Big Storms?
If your roof only leaks in heavy wind and rain, it might not be broken—it could be wind-driven rain, which pushes water upward and under shingles. Most roofs aren’t built to stop that completely. The good news? Your roof is probably okay. The not-so-good news? Any interior damage will still need to be addressed.
The Leak Might Not Be Where You Think
Got a leak in your living room but no vents or valleys above it? It probably didn’t start there. Shingles aren’t your main water barrier—they protect from impact and hold everything in place. It’s the underlayment and flashings that do the real waterproofing. So if there’s no ventilation, clear damage or wind-driven rain, the leak likely started somewhere else and worked its way in.
Are There Rooms Above Your Leak
Yes, water travels—but unless it’s a major roof issue, it usually can’t pass through an entire floor. If you see water coming from the middle of a two-story home, it might not be your roof at all. Many water lines run through attics and crawl spaces, so a plumbing leak can easily look like a roof leak. We’re happy to help you figure it out—no guesswork needed.
Before You Repair, Let’s Ask the Right Questions
Before jumping into a repair, we always ask a few key things: Is there storm damage involved? Can the roof be repaired and still meet Florida building code? Is your current shingle style and color still available? These answers matter—making the wrong call could cost you more down the road. Want to dig deeper?
